BulbHead’s Red Dog Socket

Picture the last time you were working on a home improvement project and needed the exact right sized tool to fix the issue. Rooting through your toolbox for a tool the exact size of your fastener can be extremely frustrating – is it seven millimeters, or six? Will the socket wrench that you have grip hard enough? It can derail an entire project! 

We hate the feeling of not having the right tool to get the job done, which is why we chose to review BulbHead’s new Red Dog Socket. This tool is multifunctional for many different home projects, making it the perfect solution to the classic “do I have the right tool?” crisis all of us will deal with at one point or another.

This might sound too good to be true, but the way it works is honestly just ingenious. This tiny device is filled with dozens of steel pins that can mold around almost any object, whether that be a bolt, drill bit, screw, or flower hook. Thanks to these pins, it grabs onto whatever you need it to and holds on tight – after experimenting with it on a few different types of fasteners, we found that it truly won’t let go until you need it to. 

The full range of shapes the Red Dog Socket is adaptable to include a circle, square, hex, eye bolt, hook bolt, or wing-shaped fastener. Plus, it comes with a drill adapter, so that you can use it on not only most socket wrenches but also most power drills, too. In fact, we found it worked for nearly every fastener-related need that we could think up while testing it out. 

Who Is This Product For?

Home improvements and DIY projects requiring power tools can be intimidating. You might think that the Red Dog Socket (and other tools like it) should be relegated for the pros only, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Actually, we thought that the ease of use and adaptability of this tool made it perfect for beginners. The adjustable shape means that you can use it for a range of different projects while you slowly build up your toolkit and begin familiarizing yourself with power tools and their different functions. 

On the other hand, experts on our team appreciated this nifty little product, too. It can do in a pinch for a wide range of needs, saving you valuable time that would otherwise be spent sorting through your tool box to find exactly the right size socket wrench. The main purpose of this product is multifunctionality, and convenience. We think everyone can benefit from that. We tested it out on various odd projects around our homes, the fasteners already sitting in our toolkit, and even used the drill attachment on our power drill, and were pleased with the results in each case. 

Is It Worth the Price?

It’s no secret that power tools can run expensive, but in the case of the Red Dog Socket, that couldn’t be further from the truth. This clever tool is $19.99, which is a fair price for what you get: multifunctionality, convenience, ease of use. You also have the option to buy it in a two pack for $39.98, or a three pack for $59.97. We felt that these purchase options make it an easy gift for the home-improvement DIYers in your life – you can give them something useful that they’ll actually enjoy, without breaking the bank. 

It should be noted that while the Red Dog Socket is quite useful (and very clever), it’s really a stopgap tool to use while you’re building up your toolkit, or in the event that you have a random odd job and don’t have the time or energy to dig through all of your attachments and bits to find the perfectly-sized tool. Although it has good grip strength, it’s relatively small, and isn’t a good long term solution to your DIY and power tool needs – and if you’re using it for that purpose, you may be disappointed. Look at this product for what it is – a perfect in-a-pinch or in-between tool – and you’re more likely to be satisfied with your purchase. 

Add-On Options

BulbHead makes it really easy to build out your tool kit related to the Red Dog Socket with suggested add-on products, which is one of the things we love about this company. The Red Dog Socket comes with a drill attachment, but you can also level up this tool and purchase a deluxe drill adapter for an additional $15.99. This adapter will greatly expand the number of power tools that the Red Dog Socket will work with, making an already multifunctional product that much more useful. 

After testing out the Red Dog Socket, one of our favorite aspects was how great the grip strength is. Whatever the shape of your nut, bolt, or screw, this product holds on tight – which, of course, is key to tightening or wrenching any fastener. For $19.99, we definitely expected something a bit cheaper in quality, but the Red Dog Socket exceeded our expectations. 

Another thing that we really liked about this product was just how versatile it is. According to the product website, the Red Dog Socket can replace an entire 100 piece socket set. While we didn’t get the chance to test out quite that many fastener attachments, we did find it to be true that this helpful product is useful in a ton of different projects, and is pretty much a one stop shop for many different wrench, drill, and fastener related projects. 

Final Thoughts

DIY projects and home repair are not for everyone – but after using and reviewing this project, we feel that anyone with even a mild interest in these things could benefit from having a Red Dog Socket in their toolkit. This tool is multifunctional, small and easily portable, easy to use, and, at $19.99 per unit, not even that expensive.

It’s true that you can find higher-quality and more durable toolkit products out there (with a much higher price tag). But for something that provides a heck of a lot of convenience and will save you time digging through your toolbox for a crazy-specific sized tool, it doesn’t get much better than BulbHead’s Red Dog Socket. After testing out this product, we wouldn’t hesitate to buy more.
